The Ancient Egyptians featured strongly in a number of different areas of the KS2 curriculum this year. Imagine how exciting it was for us to discover that London would be hosting a magnificent exhibition of artifacts from Pharoah Tutankhamun's tomb in the O2 centre. The staff bravely decided to organise a school trip, open to all children in the school from years 2 to 6.
With plenty of adult helpers, a thorough risk assessment and mobile phones fully charged, 3 coaches made the trip from the Midlands to the Millenium Dome and safely home again. The children were all very excited, but managed to behave remarkably well and (mostly) resisted the temptation to ask "are we nearly there yet?" every few minutes!
In between singing songs from the summer show (Jack and the Beanstalk) and chanting "disco disco disco" every time went through a tunnel, there was time on the way home to think about some of the artifacts we had seen. Back at school, Rowan class produced some very good interpretations of their individual favourites. You can see pictures here.
The Egyptians were the history topic for Years 5 and 6 in the Autumn term of 2007. Year 5 wrote and performed a play about the "Weighing of the Heart" tradition which the Ancient Egyptians believed that dead Pharoahs had to follow in the underworld. In their Art classes, Year 5 made masks and costumes to wear in the play, and made musical instruments in Design and Technology for sound effects and musical accompaniment.
Year 6 used Ancient Egypt as a theme for their art lessons too. You can see some of the splendid results here.
